Payment of the Ransom
The ransom money was packaged in a wooden box and it was made up
with a number of gold certificates (like above). The next evening, April 2, John Condon was
given a note by cab driver Raymond Perrone. Perrone said he had been paid by a man
to give the note to Condon. This note had the first instructions that led Condon all over Manhatten.
John Condon then met a man who may have been “John”, and Condon told him that
only $50,000 could be raised. The man took the money and handed Condon another
note. This note stated that the child was being held on a boat named The Nelly, which was located at Martha’s Vineyard. Lindbergh went there and searched all over, but there was
no boat called The Nelly. Lindbergh even flew an airplane low over the piers, but after 2 days Lindbergh admitted he had been fooled.
