The Crime
It was the night of March 1, 1932. The
nurse-maid, Betty Gow, put 20-month old Charles Lindbergh Jr. into his crib for the night around 8:00 pm, and about an hour and a half later Charles Lindbergh heard an odd noise coming from upstairs. He thought the noise was just some slats that had fallen off a crate in the kitchen, but at 10:00 pm Gow saw that the baby was missing from the crib. The nurse then went to inform Charles Lindbergh on what had happened, and he rushed upstairs to see for himself because he couldn’t believe it.
While Charles Lindbergh was looking around the baby's room, he noticed a small white envelope sitting on the window sill. He then got his rifle and searched the entire house looking for intruders. However, he did not find anybody.
Later, a car tire indentation was found in the mud surrounding the house due to the rain that day. Authorities were called to the Lindbergh home, and as they were searching the area around the house, they discovered different sections of a crude-looking ladder lying in nearby bushes. Police searched the surrounding area for miles and miles, looking for any evidence.
